Akame ga Kill! is a manga series written by Takahiro and illustrated by Tetsuya Tashiro. It was published between March 2010 and December 2016 in Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine and was compiled into a total of fifteen volumes released between August 2010 and February 2017. The story centers on Tatsumi, a young villager who travels to the capital to raise money for his village, only to find it rife with corruption. He meets a group of assassins called Night Raid who will recruit him to help them in their fight against the Empire and corruption. In this article, we are going to explain the difference between the Akame ga Kill! manga and the anime series.
How does Akame ga Kill! end?
Manga
Akame tells Najenda that her body is suffering from Murasame’s Trump Card; she got used to it. She plans to continue being an assassin to protect everyone’s new life. Najenda continued to fight alongside Akame to protect the new nation. She never married, but she adopted a child. With the birth of the new nation, many skilled individuals, traumatized by the Empire’s corruption, left the Emperor’s camp to join the Revolutionary Army.
They served the brand new empire and supported the new nation without getting their hands dirty with countless crimes. Even officials dedicated them to the cause. The Peacekeepers’ rebellion against the land had subsided thanks to the fall of the old empire. A number of strict rules have been removed to allow people to enjoy their jobs without seeing that their job is a life-threatening burden.
Written as a natural cold spell, Esdeath’s Ice Storm: Commander-In-Chief instantly cleared with little to no crop damage. Akame worked to assassinate greedy government figures who wanted to take advantage of the new nation. Their deaths were undone to make it look like they had died in their sleep from a terminal illness or a hunting accident.
The northern tribes had been destroyed before the fall of the old empire. Anime
With the Empire already defeated, Esdeath refuses to give up and challenges Akame to a duel. With all of her attacks deflected away from her, Akame is forced to unleash her trump card by poisoning her own body, increasing her abilities and managing to gain the upper hand to the point of injuring Esdeath’s left arm. As a result, Esdeath cut off her arm to prevent the poison from reaching her heart.
Akame would put all of her effort into one last attack, forcing Esdeath to use her trump card and stop time, which fails, as Akame manages to slash Esdeath on her back. With the last of her strength, Esdeath hugs Tatsumi and freezes with him, before breaking into pieces. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister is cornered by Leone and activates her teigu to destroy hers, but after shooting him several times, her attempt to stop it fails and she would beat him to death.
Knowing that her injuries were fatal, Leone says goodbye to Akame and dies alone in an alley after visiting old friends of hers one last time. The revolution ends with the Emperor sentenced to death by guillotine, and before he is executed, he asks Najenda to rebuild the country. Meanwhile, Wave and Run visit Kurome’s grave and swear to help rebuild the nation. To calm public opinion, Akame accepts her blame for all her crimes with Night Raid and bids Najenda farewell, heading to an unknown destination.
Is the Akame ga Kill! manga complete?
Akame ga Kill! was written by Takahiro and illustrated by Tetsuya Tashiro. The manga was originally published in the April 2010 Gangan Joker magazine by Square Enix, sold on March 20, 2010, until the January 2017 edition, sold on December 22, 2016. The first tankōbon was published on August 21, 2010, and the final, fifteenth volume, was marketed on February 22, 2017.
A spin-off series titled Akame ga Kill! Zero is published between the eleventh issue of Monthly Big Gangan magazine released on October 25, 2013 and the second issue released on January 25, 2019. The series is written by Takahiro and illustrated by Kei Toru. The story centers on Akame’s past, when she worked as an assassin for the Empire. The first volume was released on June 21, 20145, and ten volumes were released, concluding with April 25, 2019.
The sequel, titled Hinowa ga Crush!, has been published since the seventh issue of Monthly Big Gangan magazine released on June 24, 2017. The series is written by Takahiro and illustrated by Strelka. The first volume was released on December 25, 2017. The series ended on June 24, 2022; the designer explains that the series was canceled prematurely due to poor sales of the bound volumes.
As you can see, it’s not just the original Akame ga Kill!, but rather the whole series is over. The original manga was completed, but the sequel manga was prematurely canceled and with it, the whole series.
Why did they change the ending of Akame ga Kill!?
As you could’ve noticed, there is a radical difference between the ending of the Akame ga Kill! anime and the manga. Now, this isn’t usual in the world of anime – there are some examples (like Fullmetal Alchemist), but they are rare – so the author was asked about the reason behind it, and this is what he said back in 2015 for the Swiss Polymanga magazine:
“At the beginning of the anime, the manga was already written but in the end the anime exceeded the manga. That’s the reason why I want to change the story because the people who had already seen the anime know the end and they will find the manga boring.“
And this is it. The most common reason why endings differ are the schedules, when the anime is ahead of the manga, and that seems to be the reason in this case as well.
